In essence, a walkabout takes a person out of their everyday life with the purpose in mind to ‘grow them’ as an individual. After a period of time, the individual rejoins their life wiser, with a greater personal and often cultural understanding.
Leaving your everyday life allows for the opportunity for change. It’s in the ‘trying something different’ that we make room for learning and growth and, ultimately, change. In the ‘going’ we make space for change so that we can come back and implement what we have learned.
Some say that without travel (whether that be abroad or in our own backyard), you don’t really know where you are from. Here in North America, to a certain extent, we take our world for granted. For the most part, we don’t think about things like food or electricity or transportation or safety. Witnessing something different through travel opens our eyes in a way that watching the six o’clock news cannot. Travelling allows us to witness first hand, different ways of living life; different personalities and behaviors; different problems that other people groups face around the world. It helps bring about new mind sets and new ways of seeing the world and the ‘people’ in it. They become individuals….who are all vastly different and yet also very similar.
In our everyday routines of life we rarely have time for self-reflection and yet without self-reflection we cannot learn or grow or experience the change we are all seeking. Travelling affords us the opportunity to reflect and to re-evaluate. Placing ourselves in a new environment can reveal much about ourselves; how we show up in situations, what our default behaviors are, what our false beliefs tend to be, etc. By taking ourselves out of our comfort zone and exposing ourselves to different ways of doing life, allows for us to alter rigid perspectives that may have been holding us back.
Through travelling (if we are open to it) we gain personal and cultural understanding. A walkabout is a journey of discovery. It takes us to new places in our world and in ourselves. The point of the ‘going’ is that we eventually ‘come back’ and rejoin our life….wiser ☺
Coaching, whether you working through personal or professional issues, asserts that all of the answers we seek are inside of ourselves. A good coach will not tell you what to do. The reason to work with a coach is to empower yourself to listen to your own inner voice.
WalkAboutwoman can offer life coaching to women on a one-on-one basis as a separate offering, as well as preliminary, follow-up and ongoing offering to those attending retreats. Please request more information.
